Brian Tregunna – Life Coach working with Village Works
Brian Tregunna is a Cornish boy who went away, learned a few things, came back, and is now sharing what he’s learned with the folks back home! That’s the short version, anyway…
He is a Life Coach, and has been working with Village Works since 2019, taking one or two clients at a time from the Helston and Bude/Camelford areas, providing 10 weekly coaching sessions to support people in overcoming barriers in their lives.
An experienced coach, Brian will work with his clients to overcome negative thought patterns and improve their mental wellbeing, to allow them to move forward, set goals, and achieve more than they believed possible at the outset.
But who is Brian, and how did he get to be a coach?
Brian joined Cornwall Fire & Rescue Service at a young age and made a career out of it. Leaving Cornwall on promotion to join Hereford & Worcester Fire Brigade, then becoming Chief Fire Officer and Chief Executive in Derbyshire for five years before his retirement from the Fire & Rescue Service in 2010.
It was at Derbyshire that he first came across coaching when he was offered some support with his new role. The benefits he felt from coaching were such that he made it available to all middle management upwards, and the benefits were felt across the board. Brian took on a failing organisation, and within five years had turned it around to become widely recognised as one of the highest performing in the country. Brian’s personal achievements were recognised by the UK Government’s award for ‘outstanding achievements in Leadership of Equality and Diversity’.
Retiring from the Fire & Rescue Service, Brian wanted to explore coaching in more depth, completed training and rapidly discovered that there’s more to it than first appears. He went to work for an organisation supporting injured military veterans, in Wiltshire, Dorset and Somerset, where he got more into the mental health side of coaching. Subsequently, he qualified as a Master Coach in NLP – Neuro Linguistic Programming, which is all about understanding the unconscious mind and mastering it to unlock creativity or break through barriers.
Brian has also trained in Executive coaching, so between that, NLP and the original performance coaching, he has three strands to his expertise, and a wide-ranging set of ‘tools’ that he can use, as he works with individuals, both on the Village Works programme and beyond.
When he’s not working, he practices what he preaches, and is keeping himself challenged by learning to sail, as well as reading widely, and writing a novel, off and on. He has children and grandchildren spread across the world, and DIY projects closer to home, which also keep him occupied.
Brian’s clients have the last word though:
Brian’s wide range of coaching skills has helped me to improve my personal wellbeing and to progress my work plans. I now feel much stronger and better prepared to meet future challenges.
Brian has helped me to achieve significant improvements in my life through his insightful and empathic coaching. I am now much more assertive and have let go of long-standing, strong negative emotions that were damaging my health. Brian lit a flame inside of me that can’t be extinguished and I now feel better able to deal with future life challenges
I feel lucky to have met Brian. He helped me to let go of strong negative emotions that I’ve been carrying for a long time and then coached me to learn a number of important life-skills that have significantly improved my life. Without Brian’s help I wouldn’t have been able to come so far so quickly on my journey to become a better version of myself.
