Greener Heating = Better Heating

Sustainable Warmth is finally here!

A change in how we heat our homes is coming our way and sooner than you might think! Our government has ambitious plans to save energy and become more fuel-efficient. Gas is on the way out but it has never really been an option for those residing in many rural areas like ours. This is because although it’s convenient for many, like oil we effectively dig it up and burn it. The days of oil heating systems are numbered!

In order to make a difference as soon as we can, future homes are likely to be heated electrically. Cleaner electricity in the form of air heat pumps, that suck in the air and heat it. A new type of boiler then uses that to heat the water and to skip around existing or new central heating systems. In most cases (in homes that aren’t too old), this will actually just see existing radiators fed in a different way. Cleaner, cheaper and easy enough to install.

There will be grants available which will enable residents in Cornwall to bring their heating systems up to date and for free! Cornwall has adapted a pragmatic approach to getting things done swiftly but effectively. Mitigating carbon demands is a tricky area but what is certain is that speed is of the essence. Acting quickly is required to enable us to help your heating system stand the test of time for you and your home.  

Now, nothing’s ever that straightforward is it? To meet targets there has to be an embracing of this new technology, as well as improvements in home insulation to make it work optimally. There’s no point in heating the home only to see or feel all that new warmth disappear because of poor insulation or ill-fitting windows and doors, so these items will be assessed at the same time. This will also be a time to assess the whole house in general, see how it works and get it working how it should be.

For too long many homes and homeowners or renters in Cornwall have not been in a situation where they can turn up the thermostat and certainly cannot consider a new heating system and a way of driving it. This is mainly due to the damp and cold housing stock Cornwall seems to be in the midst of which in turn, doesn’t allow residents to sustain the warmth in their own homes!

Like anything new many of us can become puzzled by a lack of knowledge or a basic understanding which is nobody’s fault, well this change is a little like that. Now it’s time for you to ask the questions, get them answered by those in the know and make the shift. You’ll wonder what all the fuss was about. You’ll have Sustainable Warmth!!

Last year the Green Homes Grant saw 169 households in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly receive energy efficiency measures (air source heat pumps and Solar PV). Sustainable Warmth is a much bigger project and has the potential to help around 400 households this year with a wide range of energy efficiency measures. As long as your combined household income is under £30,000 per year and your property has an EPC rating of E, F or G (don’t worry if you don’t know this, we can check), then please get in touch for an application form:
